Y’all I’m cooking a theory
So we’ve all come to the conclusion that *the prophecy* of FOB MCR DNP (and ignoring P!ATD) doing the whole shabang IS gonna happen at the LA show, but what if that’s not all? Like omg it’s just their wedding. Gerard’s officiating in the Joan of Arc fit, sister Daniel is somehow attending their wedding as a separate person, and every lesbian in the entire universe comes together as one and does that thing kinda like in my little pony where it’s super dark and them there’s the BRIGHTNESS LOVE PEACE KABOOM THINGY and then all of the world turns back to normal THATS GONNA HAPPEN. THE LES-BEAM. hatsune miku will also be there, I haven’t quite figured out her “role” in this situation yet. OMG THE BLACK PARADE GETS HAPPY I’m so smart AND THEY ANNOUNCE THEYRE UNCANCELLING YURI ON ICE SEASON 2/ICE ADOLESCENCE. We’re all serving too much cunt, so many political figures are gonna die

An older lady finds interest & joy in beauty & make-up to help her cope with the loss of her husband.
happy femslash february, here's a 3 volume series of grandma yuri. in fact I'm quite sure it's the only multi-volume yuri that centers around Actual Old Women
the summary frames this as the main character coping with the loss of her husband, but… he was a bit of an asshole! and her memories of him are a little ambivalent. rather than a story about grief, it’s more about freedom and self-expression—with help from someone who’s more used to being blunt and outspoken
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like that it’s a story about self-discovery; basically a coming-of-age for an 80 year old. there’s a lot that the main character has had to repress, or just never really had the chance to explore
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there’s only two chapters translated in english so far, but please. give them a read. open your heart to grandma yuri.

I know I already recommended it before a few times but I have to recommend it again because it really is the most beautiful, perfect love story that I've ever experienced. The art, the colors, the characters, the world... all of it is so wonderful!
and it's literally available online for free you have no excuse https://www.webtoons.com/en/romance/always-human/list?title_no=557

this is so obviously due to misogyny tho why are we acting confused? in any form of media, the stories with male character most likely will ALWAYS sell better, hence why straight and BL stories are so beloved. yuri stories are only beloved by wlw most of the time because they don’t pander toward straight men and other than that, no one has any interest in stories that don’t revolve around men. this is why every story that doesn’t have a male character is such a Win for me. i’m still so pleasantly surprised and happy with the success for “the guy she was interested in wasn’t a guy at all” and the drama “jeong nyeon” it’s lovely that wlw stories are finally being picked up but …. idk look at ao3 ship stats, no one cares abt the sapphic girlies as much 💀 but this is such a terrible way of consuming media - is it because people want to be attracted to male characters? how can we develop and learn as people if we don’t read about other demographics and type of people? i personally want to read abt characters of different ages, gender, jobs, social status etc etc it’s so insane to me that ppl can only obsess over conventionally attractive male characters 😭

shoujo manga discourse on twitter is fucking crazy because if it goes on longer than 12 hours the takes start turning into radfem rhetoric really fast. which could mean nothing

I've been a hobby figure skater for almost 15 years now and it always bothered me that the only figure skating representation we have in media is one of three types:
1. the sports anime type, like Yuri! On Ice in which a professional skater has a certain goal in mind and they are training to achieve that goal. This also comes in the form of skater had a bad injury and is now working towards getting back to their level or finding their love for skating again or smth (I think Spinning Out had a plot similar to this, but I haven't see much of it, so I might be wrong)
2. the one showing the bad sides of figure skating like the movie I, Tonya or Tillie Waldens Spinning. These are about bad experiences with coaches, high expectations, toxic competitiveness etc. (Although both of the examples I named are biographical, so I can't blame them for being the way they are, and I also genuinely love both of them)
3. the figure skater/hockey player romance?? idk this one, I've never read it, but I think there's a popular book about it and it's literally the only thing wattpad has to offer about figure skating (yes, I looked on wattpad, I was desperate to find something, okay?) either way, I don't care much for it bc I'm not a big hockey fan
so, anyway, none of these three types is how I experience figure skating. to me, it was always about learning new things and about this feeling of spinning faster, jumping higher and moving faster than you ever could on solid ground. and it was always a type of performing art to me. figure skating is a kind of tool for me to express myself and to interpret a song. and I also love it so so much and always have a lot of fun being on the ice.
professional figure skating is none of these things. professional figure skating is not a performing art, it's mainly about having the most rotations in a jump. it's only when professional skaters retire from competitions and start doing shows that they start performing. so while media that focuses on that aspect of figure skating is very fun and I enjoy it, it's not an experience I relate to.
as I've also said, figure skating is my hobby and there's always been a lot of joy in it and I've never had any bad experiences with coaches, so any media that centers around the darker sides of figure skating, while very enjoyable, is something I can't relate to either. I do believe it's important to portray that side tho since exploitation is an issue in professional skating and in clubs that are more focused on training kids that wanna become professional skaters, the environment can be quite toxic and competitive.
I think the only figure skating I've seen in media that I could see myself in was Barbie And The Magic Of Pegasus. in this one, figure skating isn't the main focus, it's just something Annika, the protagonist, likes to do for fun. also her level of skating is comparable to mine. (I think she does an axel at some point in the movie).
when your average YA protagonist needs a hobby, it's usually something like painting or music (but specifically only things like guitar, piano or the violin) or they play football or basketball or they do ballet if you're feeling fancy. just casually having a character be a figure skater would be so fun! they don't have to worry about triple jumps and going to nationals. you can just have them complaining about how they still can't do more than three rotations on a sit spin or that they landed an axel at the end of last season but haven't been able to do another one since then. or you could write about two characters connecting over their shared love for figure skating, whether it be romantic or platonic. so many fun possibilities!!

Not to contribute to genre stereotypes but I just checked out & dropped a bl for being kind of mindless fluff and I’m considering dropping this yuri because. I’m feeling pretty weird about how the narrative doesn’t seem to be going in the direction of directly challenging and refuting the aristocratic love interest’s classism and the literal class warfare the story’s set her up for hang on this isn’t even yuri

October 22-28 is Ace Week 2023, so I’d like to give a spotlight to some manga I have enjoyed that have also touched on asexuality.
I Want To Be A Wall by Honami Shirono
Tumblr media
A 3 volume Josei manga about the lavender marriage between Gakurouta, a closeted gay man who pines for his childhood friend, and Yuriko, an aromantic, asexual BL fangirl.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She Loves To Cook, and She Loves To Eat by Sakaomi Yuzaki
Tumblr media
An ongoing yuri Josei manga with a TV adaptation about two women who bond over food. The series recently introduced Yako, an asexual lesbian, and it’s possible that protagonist Nomoto may be on the ace spectrum as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is Love The Answer? by Uta Isaki
Tumblr media
A single volume josei manga about Chika, a young college student who has always considered herself an “alien” because she has no desire for romance or physical intimacy, but finds community with people like herself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our Dreams At Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare by Yuhki Kamatani
Tumblr media
A 4 volume Seinen manga about a closeted gay boy who gets to know the patrons of a drop-in center who all turn out to be part of the LGBTQ community. Someone-san might be considered a deuteragonist of the story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’d also like to mention two yuri manga I haven’t finished yet- I have only read the first volume of both- but because of what others have said I know they feature asexual characters!
Catch These Hands! (murata)

Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon (Shio Usui)

Yuri Manga for New (AND Not-So-New) Readers
I was talking on discord about some good yuri for beginners, and figured I'd repost here.
I get way more detailed some of these recommendations in this post, and there's great recs from another person too! Check it out!
I'm doing this accounting to various tones and tastes, so what works as a beginner yuri for one person might not for another, just read the info to figure out what your jam is.
I'll put a star by the ones about adults (which is the majority of them) since I've found that's always something people want.
Tumblr media
Goodbye my Rose Garden (Victorian yuri w/ beautiful art, just beautiful all around)*
How Do We Relationship? (messy adult relationships and lots of actually realistic intimacy)*
She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat- (A woman loves to cook but doesn’t have a huge appetite, only to find the woman next door to her does! She cooks for her and they really start to bond over food and the trials of being working adults. Yes, this is the one where the woman googles lesbian. It's really good)*
Bloom into You- a common go-to yuri for beginners for a reason, about a girl who believes she can't fall in love meeting a girl who wants to date her specifically BECAUSE she can't fall in love. Find out more about it and hear my thoughts here. It has a gorgeous anime that doesn't cover the complete story.
Doughnuts Under the Crescent Moon (sweet office lady romance, ace rep) *
Catch These Hands! (These two women were delinquents and rivals in high school, they meet up again, one reveals she was always into the other, she challenges her to a fight on the condition that if the other woman loses she'll date her. Lots of slapsticky fun and great for any lover of girl delinquents)*
Tumblr media
Run away with me, Girl (there's some abuse shown in this one, but it's a story about healing, the premise is these girls dated in high school, but one of the pressured herself "normal" and marry a man, that man turns out to be abusive, so when the former lovers reunite, they decide to run away together. It's got beautiful art and a well done story)*
The Moon on a Rainy Night (absolutely spectacular, explores the relationship between a hard of hearing girl and her closeted classmate, the characters are complex and the writing is so good!)
Kase-san And...- Starting with Kase-san and the Morning Glories, this is a very fluffy and sweet high school romance. It also has a short movie. (as the manga goes on they become college students, too)
The Two of Them Are Pretty Much Like This (slice of life about a voice actress and anime screenwriter who live together as a couple. Unfortunately the ending is a bit abrupt (and likely premature) but I love their relationship)*
My fave Otherside Picnic is great for scifi and (mild) horror lovers. It's Scifi creepypasta adventure yuri. It's a slow burn but does truly spectacularly deliver on the gay. Has an anime, it's not great, you should start with the novels. Wrote an article here. https://www.animefeminist.com/how-otherside-picnic-masterfully-uses-horror-to-explore-abuse-and-show-healing-queer-love/ *(v young adults, college students)
Tumblr media
The Guy She was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All: (A web manga about a girl who works at a record shop. Her classmate , Aya, wanders in but doesn't recognize her because she has her hair hidden with a hat and is wearing a face mask, and Aya assumes she's a guy. They bond over music and slowly start to get closer...and Aya's finds her heart is fluttering not only over this mysterious boy, but her female classmate that seems a lot like him...) It's going to get a physical release soon.
I Married my Best Friend to Shut My Parents Up (girl and her friend get married simply so her parents will stop bugging her about being single. You can probably guess where it goes from there) *
I Married my Female Friend (similar premise, except no parents involved, it's a platonic marriage they both agreed to with the promise they'll divorce if one of them falls in love. But one woman has decidedly not platonic feeling for the other that she's hiding from her, so It will likely turn romantic, it hasn't all come out here yet so I haven't finished it)*
Monthly in the Garden with my Landlord* (it didn't really hit with me but I might give it a shot again, it's solid despite the terrible title, a woman moves into a house and finds she'll be cohabitating with an idol) (Some more titles I haven't fully read that could appeal: After Hours*, Still Sick*, Cheerful Amnesia*)
My Cute Little Kitten (two roommates adopt a cat...and maybe fall in love?)*
I think all of those work as solid intro- though it does depend on what flavor you're looking for!
This article also covers some of these recs and some manga I didn't mention due to not having completely read it. so check it out: The Beginners Guide to Yuri Manga.
Here's some titles to try when you're a little more familiar with yuri (or you can try them now! I'm not your boss!)
Tumblr media
SHWD (action yuri that's taking forever to come out over here physically, featuring extremely muscular women fighting monsters. I think it was forced to end prematurely too)*
Kiss and White Lily for my Dearest Girl: (I'm only three volumes in, but it's really enjoyable. The main storyline is about two academic rivals, where one is determined to rank first in class, and the other is an effortless genius who becomes intrigued at the possibility of someone beating her. Honestly they have the kind of messy combative sexual tension I wish we'd see more often in yuri because it's so good. The story follows other couples too. However, big warning for some nonconsensual kisses in the first volume at least).
Sweet Blue Flowers/Aoi Hana- (This one is a little bit dated, and boy is the ending weirdly paced, but a lot still holds up imo. A painful and sweet coming of age tale, it also has an anime that's good but ends too soon.
One teenage characters backstory involves incestuous (older cousin) the perpetrator of which pulls the "oh no did I turn you gay? thing" but it's definitely framed as a bad thing. )
Yuri is My Job- a story about messy lesbians in a yuri-themed cafe, and how their real relationships differ from the personas they put on. Read more about it here. Big warning for sexual assault of a minor (by an adult villain) in volume 12. Has an anime covering early material.
